Public Schools

Education in our community is a top priority. Two primary school districts, Bossier Parish and Caddo Parish, offer public education for grades K-12. Programs include special programs for the gifted, the learning disabled and the physically challenged. Those living in Bossier City will attend schools in Bossier Parish, and those living in Shreveport will attend schools in Caddo Parish. Current school calendars can be found by accessing theBarksdale SLO website and selecting the city you are interested in.

Caddo schools have almost 45,000 students and 15 to 1 students per staff teacher. There are 12 high schools, 15 middle schools and 48 elementary schools. Caddo schools are recognized with a number of outstanding achievements including:

Seven Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence as designated by the U. S. Department of Education - South Highlands Academic and Performing Arts Magnet.

Top ranked #1 elementary, #1 middle & #2 elementary schools in Louisiana (based on LEAP 21 & IOWA tests): (#1) South Highlands, (#1) Caddo Middle Magnet and (#2) Eden Gardens Elementary Magnet.

Three Caddo teachers received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (only 6 state finalists).

Bossier Parish schools have almost 19,000 students and 16:1 ratio of students per teacher. Bossier has 6 high schools, 7 middle schools, and 16 elementary schools.

The state administers several large-scale testing programs. The Iowa Tests are used for the statewide norm-referenced testing program at grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. Louisiana's new criterion-referenced testing program for grades 4 and 8 is known as LEAP for the 21st Century, or LEAP 21. The new Graduation Exit Examination for the 21st Century (GEE 21) is administered at grades 10 and 11. Also, the "old" GEE continues to be administered to students who previously failed at least one part of that exam. The LEAP Alternate Assessment (LAA) has been developed for students with disabilities who cannot participate in the regular state assessments. In addition, Louisiana continues to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) at each administration.
