Recreational Facilities

Activities

Augusta is the second largest metropolitan area in Georgia, and is located near many natural attractions such as lakes, rivers, mountains, and beaches.  Many local events take place on the Savannah River, at the marina or the riverwalk area.

For horse lovers, the area offers a variety of events.  The Augusta Cutting Horse Futurity is the second largest event of its kind in the world, and the largest east of the Mississippi River.  The National Barrel Horse Association is headquartered here and holds its annual world championships here.  Aiken, just across the river in South Carolina, is a well-known horse training center.  The annual Aiken Triple Crown, held on three weekends in the spring, attracts thousands for horse races and polo.

Minor league sports teams include the Augusta Lynx, an independent member of the East Coast Hockey League, and the Augusta Greenjackets, a single A farm team of the San Francisco Giants.

Annual festivals celebrate everything from country music to the famous comedian Oliver Hardy, born near Augusta.

Of course, the best known Augusta event is the annual Masters Golf Tournament.  It's such a big event that it has its own topic here on SITES.

There are over 700 churches of many different faiths in the area.  The contacts/links for this topic include the areachurches.com web site, which provides a comprehensive list of local houses of worship.
