Base History \ Arrival

Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the premier medical institution in the Department of Defense, located in the District of Columbia, one mile from the District line to neighboring Maryland.

LOCATION:  The Main Section of Walter Reed Army Medical Center(WRAMC) is located in an attractive Washington residential area between Rock Creek Park and Georgia Avenue near the Maryland-D.C. boundary.  All patient care activities, as well as most WRAMC administrative services, are located on main post.  Today WRAMC, fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, continues to service the military community from in and around Washington, DC and around the world.

Unlike a traditional military installation, which can be similar to a self-contained community, WRAMC is predominately a work site.  Housing is limited, seven quarters for key and essential personnel.  The remainder of the military work force lives in the many civilian communities that make up the Washington Metropolitan Area, which encompasses the District of Columbia, portions of the States of Maryland and Virginia.

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center's Annex, located three miles north of the Center's Main Section in nearby Montgomery County, MD is the home of WRAMC's shopping complex, featuring a P.X., commissary, clothing sales store, hobby shop, the Child Development Center, Veterinary Clinic, and the Walter Reed Institute of Research (WRAIR).
